Description
This splendid Spanish revival style estate property is located in the Historic Mesa neighborhood. King C. Gillette, who made his fortune bringing the disposable razor blade to the world, was an early presence in Palm Springs. Gillette was known as a frequent guest of Nellie Coffman, proprietor of the Desert Inn in Palm Springs. He felt so at home on her property that he was often seen wandering about the grounds and lobby in a tattered old bathrobe. During this period, he built a sprawling family compound. While the entire estate is no longer intact, this large portion of the compound has been lovingly updated and offers a beautiful slice of the paradise he so enjoyed.
The spacious home has 5 bedrooms, four full bathrooms and two half bathrooms. There is also a dedicated office space and a separate card room with its own beverage center and bar area. The home has multiple decorative fireplaces indoors and a working fireplace outdoors. There are three bedrooms in the main house and the other two bedrooms are located in freestanding guest houses (casitas). Each of the guest houses has an outdoor loggia space and one of them also has a den/media space with a beverage/coffee bar. The home is sited on a half-acre and the private compound is entirely walled and gated with separate pedestrian and automobile entry gates. Designed around a central lawn and pool area, there are multiple spaces throughout the property for individual and group activities.
The Home's Location: The Historic Mesa
The Historic Mesa neighborhood is one of the most sought after locations in Palm Springs. Home to many Hollywood stars over the years, it is tucked at the base of San Jacinto's 11,000 foot peak and the protected location is a short walk to wonderful restaurants, coffee shops, hotels and shopping. This home is at the North end of the neighborhood - closest to shopping and dining and also readily accessible to beautful hiking trails. Strolling through safe and quiet neighborhood one can enjoy the historic estates or pop over to Mortons Botanical Gardens. The Indian Canyon golf courses are located nearby in the Southern end of town as well.
